"Bite-Sized Paintings" Artist's Statement

2009 is a bad year to be an artist. With a weak economy and low consumer confidence, people aren't looking to spend as much on luxury items. Luxury items like artwork. Uh oh. But art is vital for one's piece of mind!

Like a lot of people, I'm feeling a financial hurt. I've had a lot of recent expenses and nothing is coming in to offset that. What's the solution? A good artistic compromise!

The bite-sized paintings, actually 9"x12", were created with two purposes in mind. First, they were exercises in honing and developing my personal style. Every piece must be a strong representation of my approach to art! Having been painting larger and larger, it was an enjoyable venture to instead go small and really test my composition ability. The second purpose of these paintings is simple: Create art that people can afford! With a relatively tiny price tag, I hope to erase the trepedation a potential buyer might have. More people can enjoy my artwork, and I'll be able to eat something more than generic rice cakes!

I'm sure my former art professors would frown on my $80 price, as I've been taught to never devalue my work. Oh well. Such is the times we live in. Oh, and before you comment that $80 isn't "cheap" to you, try and think about how much you expect to earn for a day's work. Got it?
